SambaDá, The Funk Junket
Fri Mar 22 7:30 pm
21 and up
For 25 years, SambaDá has been creating a collision of contemporary and traditional Brazilian sounds. Brazilian natives, Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora, bring their long history and careers in Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian song and dance to the group. Dandha grew up in Ilê Aiyê, Brazil’s first black carnaval bloco and renowned cultural center. Papiba is a capoeira master who has been training since the age of 15 with Raízes do Brasil of Brasilia, BR. Both Dandha and Papiba have been teaching locally, nationally and internationally for over 30 years. On sax and flute, Anne Staford hails from California and infuses the band with her vast experience in both Brazilian music and jazz. Fellow Californian, Will Bates, holds down the drum set with his extensive study and performance in groups ranging from rock, funk, and West African. Blended with the band’s Brazilian percussionists, Abel da Masceno and Will Martins and Brazilian bassist, Elvis Aeron, SambaDá has developed a joyous blend of afro-samba-reggae-funk guaranteed to keep you dancing!
